#IWD2023 Interview with Himeno Niimi, Associate Consultant at Ikigai Authentic Ltd.

How do you define a goal of gender equality?

Gender equality is a goal in itself but consists of numerous goals within it. My goal of gender equality is to embrace ourselves and each other for who we are.

What skills do you believe equip yourself with to be successful in your career?

Being open-minded. As a student, it is important to be receptive to the views of others and be willing to take up new opportunities. Only then will you be able to build and consolidate your own views and ideas.

What makes you stay motivated and inspired, especially in the face of challenges or obstacles?

The people around me: my colleagues, friends and family. Seeing them pursue their goals and succeed motivates me to keep challenging myself.

What advice would you give to young women just starting out in their careers?

I think the advice I would give to anyone would be, don’t be afraid to express your opinion. When I was younger, I was afraid of sharing my opinions in class in case someone would criticise it. But speaking out is not about being right or wrong. Your opinions are as important as anyone else’s and they could provide a new perspective which others hadn’t thought of.

Who is your role model, and how do you think you can become other’s role models?
One of my role models is Sadako Ogata, the female head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). She was also known as the “diminutive giant” for her petite stature and excellent negotiating skills. Her visionary leadership is truly inspiring.
